Knee Injuries and Rehab

knee joint anatomyThe knee is the largest joint in the body and is composed of the thigh bone (femur) joining the shin bone (tibia). The knee joint is held together by tough, strong ligaments called the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, lateral collateral ligament, and medial collateral ligament. Between the femur and tibia there are two rubbery pads called the medial and lateral meniscus. These knee structures, along with your muscles, help maintain stability, allow you to complete everyday activities, and perform sport specific exercises and actions with ease. Unfortunately, these structures can also be injured from overuse or a sudden twist, landing, or step.

lachman kneeIf you have had an injury or your knee has started hurting, our Physical Therapists can evaluate and implement the best course of action. When your knee problem is due to overuse, such as knee pain caused by running, surgery is usually not necessary. We are frequently able to construct physical therapy treatment plans that will provide you with the flexibility, strength, and knowledge needed to prevent future knee issues.

When the damage to your knee is more severe, surgery may be necessary to repair the injured tissues. In the event surgery is required, we can help direct you to the area’s best surgeons for your particular problem. We have a strong tradition of working very closely with local surgeons to make sure your post-operative physical therapy is both safe and effective. Good communication with your surgeon helps you to get the best care for your knee injury. We utilize treatment protocols providing a framework for the type of surgery you had, but also customized specifically to your needs. Your knee rehabilitation program will be designed to return you to the sports and activities that you enjoy as safely and quickly as possible.
